OAMC and No Electricity

Wow, I haven't posted here in a long time, have I?

It seemed like Sheri was the only person who read this blog and now she can have gluten again (as far as I know) and summer hit and so I've let it go.

Now I'm seriously thinking of getting into Once A Month Cooking. For me it might end up being once a week cooking. I don't think I'm that committed yet. Or that energetic. I really need to start eating better and so does my family. Most days when dinner rolls around I'm too tired and unmotivated to cook and so is David.

I've been looking at recipezaar for OAMC recipes. I was very excited to find out that the shopping list option is available with the free membership. I think I'm going to do 3-4 beef recipes one week, then 3-4 chicken recipes the next. I'll have to let you know how it goes. If I like (or don't like) any of the recipes, I'll review them here.

Also, our electricity went out Thursday night at about 8 pm - a lovely way to end our 21st Anniversary! David and I did have a good day other than that, though. The kids said it went off and on several times while we were gone during the day. Once it went out after we got home it stayed off until about 4:00 pm on Friday. Luckily it wasn't a hot day, I was more concerned about all the food in our fridge and freezer. They were both pretty full.

My very nice boss Joe let us use his generator, so our food didn't spoil. That made me happy. It also got me thinking. We should probably have food storage - or at least a good portion of it - that won't spoil if the electricity goes out. And what about cooking? Our stove is electric, so we couldn't use it. We did have lots of flashlights, but no non-electric radio. I guess we have some preparedness things to work on.

Ironic that I started thinking about doing freezer meals now, isn't it?

  1. I eats the glutens. I'm still intrigued by your blog though :)

Review Pamela's products, amazing stuff! We can review them together, have a taste-test day or something. I would eat those pancakes anytime!

I do eat somethings non-gluten, I have a few pastas and that.

So, what are you eating that's so bad?

I was going to tell you we had a Stouffer's chicken and rice bake you might like, but it was coated on the top with breadcrumbs...

It's summer, make your kids cook. Remember when we were teenagers and Mom made you and me cook once a week, and it had to be a hot meal? LOL! Note that Holly never did it, nor the younger siblings, just us two. LOL!

The OAMC thing sounds interesting. I'd probably look at all the meals in the freezer and go 'eh, let's go out'. LOL. Usually I want a sammich and tis the season for BLT's with tomatoes from the garden... can you have tomachos?

Strangely enough, I haven't wanted pizza lately, I didn't think that would ever happen. Maybe it's just the old pizza in the fridge. LOL!

  2. Wow, you still read my blog when I actually write it! I haven't eaten anything really horrible, but I haven't eaten really healthy stuff either. I need to start eating more veggies and beans and stuff like that.

Yeah, I should make the kids cook, huh? David attempted that and it was met with much resistance. I think that if we let them cook something like hamburger helper (and let them pick it out) they might cook, but then it leaves me with the same old, "but what do I eat?" dilemma.

I'm gonna hafta get a bunch of tomatoes and zucchinis when I come out tomorrow. That might encourage me to eat more veggies. I can eat both of those. You can eat bacon? I'm jealous.

Ya know, I vaguely remember mom making us cook in the summer when we were teens. I didn't remember that Holly wouldn't cook. Wow, something you remember better than I do. That's amazing. It's ironic she's a lunch lady now, isn't it? I told my kids about when mom and dad made us weed the garden and Holly would pull out the vegetable plants and leave the weeds. I swear she did it on purpose so they wouldn't make her weed any more. Amber thought that was the funniest story ever.

I don't think any of us wanted Becky to cook back then. She made strange things she wouldn't eat but expected us to. I loved grocery shopping and cooking back then. Maybe it's because I didn't have to do it all the time. I'm pretty sure the boys were too little to cook much of anything, but Christopher could have made us one of his famous pb&j's. Or some of his cheddar cheese and strawberry jam sandwiches. Mmmm...

  3. Yup, I still watch to see if you update this.

So if you didn't cook, what would your kids eat for dinner? Remember when Mom went on strike that one time and we all had to fend for ourselves? I don't think I was bothered by that. They do have hamburger helpers with rice, but I'm not sure how many.

I think Holly was on her mission when Mom had us cook, and yeah the younger kids were too young and no, I wouldn't eat anything Becky made back then. AND Holly didn't know how to cook anyway.

I know we have tomatoes... our zucchinis aren't coming up that fast, we're actually staying ahead of them, we'll see what's out there tomorrow. We have beets and swiss chard... eh.

I do eat bacon, however, I've only been eating it since Friday.

  4. Well, you got to eat bacon for a few days... I like bacon, too, but not how I feel after I eat it. I kinda remember mom going on cooking strike. Now that I'm in that position, I understand why. Sometimes we cook dinner at our house and sometimes the kids have to fend for themselves. Sometimes we are tired of all their complaints or not eating what we cook...

I'm glad I got some veggies yesterday. I haven't tried the Olive Garden Minestrone Copycat recipe yet, maybe tomorrow. I did have 2 tomato and cheese sandwiches for lunch. They were so yummy! Ripe tomatoes from the garden are WAY better than the tomatoes from the store!

  5. ROFL! I like all your comments about me. I still remember making something revolting with oranges and canned milk. I think I've gotten better since then, eh?

I tried to do OAMC once, but we just didn't have enough room to put it all! We only have a tiny freezer. Maybe when we have our own place we can have a giant freezer for all that stuff.

BTW, I read your blogs! I think this one is interesting even though I'm not allergic to gluten.

  6. Yup. I remember your nasty cooking. Remember when you made that spaghetti and you didn't know you were supposed to stir it and it all clumped together into one big nasty mess? I tried to peel it apart, but it still wasn't very edible. You are a MUCH, MUCH better cook now. I would eat what you cook now with pleasure - if it were gluten-and-all-that-other-stuff-I-can't-have free.

Yeah. I know they say you can do OAMC with a small freezer, but I really don't know how. I've been experimenting with recipes from freezer cookbooks - and my family has even eaten them so far.

I haven't actually gotten to the freezer part yet. I figured I'd better try out the recipes first to make sure we'd eat them before I made massive amounts of them. So far I've tried quiche and chicken enchiladas. I'll have to blog about it soon.

Someday you'll have your own place. It seemed like it took David and me forever, but it happened.
